Visualization of Porous Media

We present a system for the visualization of porous media, which is based on a spatial subdivision technique. The media is represented as an interconnected set of cubic nodes that are organized in a structured fashion. The model .can represent ,the porous media at any scale, by introducing subdivisions as required within the limits of the hardware. A user can visualize an image of the 3D model by rendering nodes with different colors, which represent different parts of the media, or even as transparent or semitransparent nodes. In addition to viewing the models in three dimensions, the system allows a user to view arbitrary cross sections through the model. The developed system will allow users to monitor gas and fluid flow through models,· under various physical conditions. This can be achieved by applying a set of algorithms to find spatial connectivity between regions of the model. Also, we are developing techniques to model surface properties (surface to volume ratio) and simulate other physical properties, including electrical, sonic, and magnetic. The computer system is run on the IRIS4D workstation and models are built using inhouse software and rendered using SAS/NVISION® software.
